Tonight I checked the back of the PC to see if the Ethernet cable was loose, which it wasn't, but I did notice a red light and a yellow light on on the back of the NIC.

I don't check the back of the PC often but I could swear it used to be green Does this mean the card is failing?

I googled it and couldn't find much out.

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information in the registry is incomplete or damaged.

Code 19 Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device. If I right click and uninstall, will it reinstall upon rebooting? Or am I opening a can of worms? Thanks again. It also appears I don't have a regular NIC in the box.

When I run this test it reports that my connection is working perfectly. My original HD died after less than two years and I am currently running on the second one. With this setup it appears that there is no driver installed for the ethernet adapter. I will attempt to install a driver if I can figure out what driver I need. I am a little lost on what to look for in trouble shooting this problem.

I do not know how to check what type of ethernet adapter I have in order to find a driver for it. Under networks it only shows a real generic ethernet connection and not the broadcom etc. The red and green lights that usually flash when a ethernet cable is installed are not lit. I am so wondering if there is no green light that mean it caused problem with Ethernet port. Is that bad? There are two LEDs just above the Ethernet port, one upper right indicates speed of connection the other upper left indicates activity level. Recently I was connected to Internet on a computer via a wired network, suddenly a huge lightning struck within metres radius around our building, the moment it struck, my Network went off, the Internet was out although the Modem shows Internet signal.

The network icon was crossed red. I plugged the cable in an another Computer, it worked fine, I could access Internet. I guess due to lightning, the telephone wire carried high pulses and made the LAN card bad. Any solution??? This is exactly the same thing happened to me, the lightning struck around the neighbourhood, so have you found the solution? We have a similar problem in the ethernet. We remove the energy cable and with no energy we turn on the computer.

We wait for the orange led to died down. We connected the cable and turn the computer on. This worked for us. Probably the HW was locked in a state that cannot be removed. Then reinstall it. If it will not re-install or does not work after re-installation, go to BIOS and run a hardware scan.

Your card is probably fried. I hope this works for you! Sounds like the network adapter's fried. I'd say run a hardware scan and if it doesn't pick up, you should get a new network adapter.

Verify that the network adapter is installed correctly and detected by the computer with no conflicts. In Microsoft Windows, open the Device Manager and verify there are no errors. If conflicts exist or the network adapter is detected as an "Other device," the network card is not installed correctly.

Try letting Windows re-detect and install the network card by removing the network adapter and any other conflict devices from Device Manager and then rebooting the computer. If Windows re-detects the card but does not find the drivers, download the latest network card drivers from the computer manufacturer's website or the network card manufacturer's website.

If this is a wired network, verify the network cable is connected correctly and make sure the LEDs next to the network jack are properly illuminated. For example, a network card with a solid green LED or light usually indicates that the card is either connected or receiving a signal.

If the green light is flashing, this is an indication of data being sent or received.

I have a solid orange light from Ethernet port, is that bad?

With this port, one LED lights up if connected properly, and one flashes when transmitting data. If there are no lights or the lights are orange or red, the card may be bad, not connected properly, or may not be receiving a signal from the network.

If you're on a small network and can check the hubswitchor routerverify the cables are connected correctly, and it has power. If, after checking the connections, the LED indicators appear bad, the network adapter, port, or cable may be defective. If you're using a laptop with a wireless networklook for the laptop's Wi-Fi button and make sure it is turned on.

I have a solid orange light from Ethernet port, is that bad?

Many laptops have a Wi-Fi button that allows the wireless network to be turned on and off. The Wi-Fi button is often located above the keyboard or the front edge of the laptop, but it also may be integrated with an F key.

If the button is turned on, make sure you're using the correct Wi-Fi hotspot by right-clicking the Network icon in the Windows Notification Area and clicking "Connect to a network. Finally, when connecting to most wireless networks, you need to enter the proper SSID password to connect to the network. If the incorrect password is entered, you won't be able to access the network. Verify that the network card is capable of pinging itself by using the ping command. Windows users can ping the computer from a Windows command line.

Unix and Linux users can ping from the shell. Executing either of the above commands should get replies from the network card. If you receive an error, or the transmission fails, the network card is not physically installed into the computer correctly, has the incorrect or outdated drivers installed, or is defective.

Make sure the network card is physically installed in the computer correctly by removing it and re-inserting it again. Check the network card manufacturer's website for the latest drivers and install those drivers.Ethernet has since retained a good deal of backward compatibility and has been refined to support higher bit ratesa greater number of nodes, and longer link distances.

The original 10BASE5 Ethernet uses coaxial cable as a shared mediumwhile the newer Ethernet variants use twisted pair and fiber optic links in conjunction with switches. Over the course of its history, Ethernet data transfer rates have been increased from the original 2.

The Ethernet standards comprise several wiring and signaling variants of the OSI physical layer in use with Ethernet. Systems communicating over Ethernet divide a stream of data into shorter pieces called frames. Each frame contains source and destination addresses, and error-checking data so that damaged frames can be detected and discarded; most often, higher-layer protocols trigger retransmission of lost frames.

As per the OSI modelEthernet provides services up to and including the data link layer. Ethernet is widely used in homes and industry, and interworks well with Wi-Fi. The Internet Protocol is commonly carried over Ethernet and so it is considered one of the key technologies that make up the Internet.

Metcalfe left Xerox in June to form 3Com. As part of that process Xerox agreed to relinquish their 'Ethernet' trademark. Formal standardization efforts proceeded at the same time and resulted in the publication of IEEE Ethernet initially competed with Token Ring and other proprietary protocols.

By the end of the s, Ethernet was clearly the dominant network technology. However, in the mid to late s, PC networking did become popular in offices and schools for printer and fileserver sharing, and among the many diverse competing LAN technologies of that decade, Ethernet was one of the most popular.

By the early s, Ethernet became so prevalent that Ethernet ports began to appear on some PCs and most workstations.

This process was greatly sped up with the introduction of 10BASE-T and its relatively small modular connectorat which point Ethernet ports appeared even on low-end motherboards. Since then, Ethernet technology has evolved to meet new bandwidth and market requirements.

Competing proposals and broad interest in the initiative led to strong disagreement over which technology to standardize. In Decemberthe group was split into three subgroups, and standardization proceeded separately for each proposal. The ISO standard was published in Ethernet has evolved to include higher bandwidth, improved medium access control methods, and different physical media. The coaxial cable was replaced with point-to-point links connected by Ethernet repeaters or switches.

Ethernet stations communicate by sending each other data packets : blocks of data individually sent and delivered. The MAC addresses are used to specify both the destination and the source of each data packet. Ethernet establishes link-level connections, which can be defined using both the destination and source addresses. On reception of a transmission, the receiver uses the destination address to determine whether the transmission is relevant to the station or should be ignored.

A network interface normally does not accept packets addressed to other Ethernet stations.
